Elgin Judo Club – A Brief History and Introduction
By Steve Williamson 3rd Dan
Elgin Judo Club has a long history, dating back to 1960 when training was held in one of the old RNAF huts at Pinefield industrial Estate. The club took the opportunity to move to its present location at the Elgin Community Centre soon after it opened in 1970, to become one of the Centre’s mainstay activities. All such club affiliation to the centre was done away with a number of years ago, and the club now uses the Centre as its ‘home’ base and has to pay fees.
The club is run on a voluntary basis, and over the years it has survived on the goodwill of coaches and committee members.
The club caters for all ages and abilities, whether the member enjoys judo as a competitive sport or just enjoys the exercise and rough and tumble.
Most players within the club are highly competitive, (we have had a number of national medal winners over the years), they work very hard, but are able to enjoy their sport at the same time. Recreational players are also welcome, but usually find that even if they don’t wish to enter competitions, that they still want to progress through the grading system and get the coveted black belt.
The club must have discipline and members are asked to obey certain rules, however, the club has a friendly atmosphere and social activities are also important to members.
If you have any questions, or would like information, then please speak to either the coaches or committee members, who are there to help.
You’re bound to find your time with the club highly enjoyable and rewarding!
